Factors governing maternal reproductive success and genetic diversity of future generation for Camel

Maternal reproductive successes and genetic diversity of future generation of Camellia japonica were quantitatively evaluated in terms of pollination rate (early fruit set rate), survival rate, mature seeds set rate and allelic richness under the sites of the different flower densities on Miyake-jima island where volcanic activity incurred different degree of damages to individual Camellia trees in different part of the island. Under the low and high population densities of pollinator bird (Zosterops japonica) due primarily to low and high flower resource abundance, we initially expected that the pollination rate would decrease on the sites of low flower densities. However, pollination rate exhibited inverse correlations with pollinator and flower densities. In contrast, survival rate was low on the sites with low flower densities, and this made similar final fruit set rate among the different populations with different flower densities. Moreover final seed set rate (seed/ovule) was similar among these sites. Despite the similar maternal reproductive success in terms of final seed set rate, genetic diversity of future generation may be expected to vary among the sites. Therefore, by examining the genetic diversities of seeds and mature trees from the sites of varying flower densities, we plan to evaluate how pollinator density and behavior affect the future generation of C. japonica. In the result, allelic richness of mother tree was similar among the sites and that of seeds was also similar. That to say, pollinator might be transporting similar qualitative and quantitative pollens among the sites of different flower density. Therefore the difference of pollinator behavior among the sits might be the key factor of reproductive success for C. japonica.
